Historical Background

Ordered in 1794, USS Constitution was one of the original six frigates of the young United States Navy, built at Edmund Hartt's shipyard in Boston. Her thick oak hull and rugged construction would prove decisive in her most famous battle.

On 19 August 1812, during the War of 1812, Constitution defeated the British frigate HMS Guerriere in a brutal close-range engagement. British cannonballs reportedly bounced off her hull, leading to her enduring nickname "Old Ironsides."

Saved from scrapping in 1830 by public outcry sparked by a popular poem, she went on to serve for decades more, including a circumnavigation of the globe. Since 1934, she has been permanently berthed in Boston, remaining part of the active U.S. Navy fleet to this day — the oldest commissioned warship still afloat in the world.
